Prayer for Proper 18:

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as
you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength,
so you never forsake those who make their boast of your
mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
(Book of Common Prayer, 1979 ed.)
Food for thought:

The Gospel somewhere says that a person who begins to build a tower
but stops with the foundation and never completes it is ridiculous.

We should work to bring every aspiration to a conclusion,
completing the work of God
by an elaborate building up of His commandments.

Gregory of Nyssa, On Virginity

Food for thought:

O blessed change! Once the body wept, but now laughs forever more.
Once it desired the cisterns of which the prophet speaks,
but it now has been satisfied in the Lord, the fountain of life.

St. Jerome of Stridonium, Letter 108, referring to Jeremiah 2:4-13

Food for thought:

What is the mark of a Christian?
It is to watch daily and hourly and to stand prepared
in that state of total responsiveness pleasing to God,
knowing that the Lord will come at an hour that he does not expect.

Basil the Great
