Music Fridays- May 29, 2009

Maybe I just love the idea of talking, Bible-thumping veggies, maybe it is because I have two small children, or maybe I'm just hungry. In any event, this week's musical number involves Mr. Lunt and a passion for the all-American sandwich. Enjoy.

Ascension Sunday
One or more of the following Scriptures will be used:

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26; Psalm 1 (United Methodist Hymnal 738)
1 John 5:9-13; John 17:6-19

Prayer:

O God, the Mighty One of glory, you have exalted Jesus Christ with great triumph to your dominion in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
A Collect for Ascension Sunday from the Order of St. Helena.

Food for thought:

The ascension confirms what had been spoken by the prophet: “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit Thou on my Right Hand, until I make Thy foes Thy footstool.’” Thus God who was announced by prophets is truly one and the same as God who is celebrated in the true gospel, whom we Christians love with the whole heart as the Maker of heaven and earth, and all things within it.
Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 3.10.5.

Tyler Street UMC In The News- Sort Of

There was a high-speed police chase through Oak Cliff on Monday afternoon in which a car went the wrong way up Tyler Street. WFAA has video of the incident on their website- and right around the 13 minute mark, you will see the car speed past our sanctuary, which is on the right-hand side of the screen.

Prayer:

Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray,
and give more than either we desire or deserve.
Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and
giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
save through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Food for thought:

“The Christian vocation is to be in prayer, in the Spirit, at the place where the world is in pain, and as we embrace that vocation, we discover it to be the way of following Christ, shaped according to his messianic vocation to the cross, with arms outstretched, holding on simultaneously to the pain of the world and to the love of God.”

N.T. Wright, The Challenge of Jesus, p.190

St. Richard Chichester (1197-1253)

Food for thought:
“In a potentially hypnotizing world, the challenge for undivided worshipers is to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus- simple to define perhaps, but in practice not quite so easy. Our hearts are tugged in so many different directions. Around every corner are new distractions fighting for our attention- so many things that could deflect our time and energy away from loving God”
Matt Redman, The Unquenchable Worshiper, p.94.(Regal Books, 2001)
