Music Fridays- Liturgy, Mozart, and Modern Music: Part 3

In the first two installments of this series, we examined musical settings of the Kyrie prayer, first with Motzart's Mass in C Minor and then in more contemporary music.

This week, we turn our attention to the Gloria, or the section of a liturgy or order of worship centered on praising God.  The praise and celebration of God's love and grace is central to all acts of Christian worship. Traditionally, in the communion texts which have defined worship for Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant Christians for centuries, there is a very formal and established place for the Gloria in our worship. Even today, the dinging of the Doxology and the Gloria Patri in United Methodist congregations continues this ancient pattern, though typically used in a much less formal way today.

In Mozart's Mass in C Minor, the Glora is broken into seven music sections which, when taken together, comprise a prayer which praises God, seeks God's mercy, and celebrates the doctrine of the Trinity. Mozart based his text on the Latin version of the Liturgy. I will post a translation of Mozart's text under each Youtube clip. Just FYI, the current version of the Latin text used by Catholics and some Protestants today reads:

Glory be to God on high.
And in earth peace towards men of good will.
We praise thee.
We bless thee.
We worship thee.
We glorify thee.
We give thanks to thee for thy great glory.
O Lord God, heavenly King
God the Father almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ.
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right of the Father, have mercy upon us.
For thou only art Holy. Thou only art the Lord. Thou only art the Most High.
Thou only, O Jesu Christ,
with the Holy Ghost, art Most
High in the glory of God the Father. Amen

On with the show:

Gloria

Translation: Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to all those of good will.

Laudamus te

Translation: We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You.

Gratias

Translation:We give thanks to You, according to Your great glory.

Domine Deus

Translation:Lord God, king of heaven, God the almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father.

Qui tollis

Translation: You who remove the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You who remove the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You who sits at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

Quoniam

Translation: Because you alone are holy. You alone are the Lord. You alone are the highest, ...

Cum Sancto Spiritu

Translation:... Jesus Christ. With the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Next week, we'll look at present-day musical expressions of the Gloria.

Music Fridays- Liturgy, Mozart, and Modern Music: Part 2

Two weeks ago, I posted the first in this series on Mozart's Mass in C Minor compared to modern sacred music. In that episode, we focused on the Kyrie, which you may recall is the ancient prayer:

Kyrie eleison.

Christe eleison.

Kyrie eleison.

Which translates to:

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

This week, I want to share some more modern tunes which either use the Kyrie itself or which share the theme of mercy.

As a member of Generation X, I first heard the Kyrie thanks to this classic 80s one-hit-wonder from Mr. Mister:

The non-denominational monastery at Taize has at least two dozen versions of the Kyrie, which are modern though decided old school. If nothing else, these clips show that European protestants aren't afraid of looking too Catholic- and they make beautiful meditative musical prayers.

In the late 90s, Third Day offered up a Southern Rock cry for mercy sounds like something 38 Special might have recorded after attending a Billy Graham Crusade.

Modern worship leader Chris Tomlin offered up prayer on a recent album:

If you've got a favorite modern hymn or chorus about God's mercy, feel free to share it in the comments.

Check back next week as we dive into the Gloria!

Jonah 4:1-11 "Grace Can Make You Angry"

Prayer:

Father God, You are the strength of all the saints;
In Your mercy, receive our prayers and remind us that we are dependant on Your grace and love,
Teach us how to keep Your commandments, and how to imitate the example of Your Son Jesus
Who lives and reigns with You and Your Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Music Fridays- Liturgy, Mozart, and Modern Music: Part 1

Mozart's Mass in C Minor is a full communion liturgy set to some of the most beautiful music ever composed. It opens with the Kyrie:

The lyrics are:
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Which translates to:
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

These lyrics are an ancient prayer which has been in church tradition reaching back to the earliest forms of Christian worship. (Wikipedia has a handy article on the history of the Kyrie.)

Over the next few weeks, we'll be alternating between Mozart's Mass in C Minor and modern music which shares common theological themes with the preceding section of the Mass. Stop by text week for contemporary cries for the Lord's mercy in modern music.

Prayer:

Father God, we ask Your help to keep Your Church
focused on the things which matter most.
Help us to understand the Gospel of Your grace,
To build our lives on the words of Your Son Jesus,
And to reach out to others proclaiming forgiveness of sins
and new life in Jesus Name;
so that all who turn to the Church for help will discover Your love for them,
and experience the transforming power of Your mercy and grace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
