The Christmas Message

 1-5About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancĂ©e, who was pregnant.

 6-7While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel.  8-12There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God's angel stood among them and God's glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger."

 13-14At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises:

   Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
   Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

 15-18As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. "Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us." They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

 19-20Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they'd been told! (Luke 2:1-20, The Message)

Serving Oak Cliff: Jefferson Median Beautification Project

Dear Tyler Streeters,

A project for community service came to Jamie Nelson's attention this week. We thought all of you would like to know about it. Here are the details from the official blog of the Jefferson Median Beautification Project:

On Saturday Dec 12th at 9:00 am the first 32 trees will be delivered at the intersection of Jefferson and Hampton. We will be planting on both sides of Hampton. With 32 trees we need a LOT of volunteers so please forward this to your neighborhoods, schools, churches, clubs, service organizations, etc. Remind them that this is just the first step of a multi-year project. Eventually we will be planting the entire length of Jefferson from Sunset High School continuing West all the way to the Cockrell Hill city limit (a total of 1.6 miles), so it will pass by many neighborhoods.

This will be absolutely transformative for this corridor and change the median from a mostly barren moonscape to a nice shady linear park. So we hope to get a broad cross-section of Oak Cliff residents helping, especially since most of us drive this area at some time or another.Trees cool and clean the air, provide habitat, muffle traffic and other noise, and increase property values. Trees are neighborhood friendly. Any time we can add more trees we improve the quality of life for all residents of Dallas. Please help us with this effort.

Dress appropriately for the weather that day (dress in layers) and bring a shovel and gloves. If you can't help us on that date, perhaps you are able to make a financial contribution to the project. We need to buy watering bags for the trees. We will try to get free wood chips (let us know if you have connections!) but if we can't we'll need to buy them. We must keep the trees watered and mulched for the first 2 years. And for this first phase we are planting in very rocky soil. We have walked those two medians and the rock is very close to the surface so we are having the holes augered ahead of time to make planting easier. We appreciate our volunteers and don't want them to have to chip through rock with pick axes! So we need to pay someone to auger 32 holes in that rocky ground. That will be our largest expense for Phase I.Please mark your calendar now.

Thank you! Van Johnson

If you can help, let me know. I am looking into t-shirts and/or name tags to identify Tyler Street members who come serve. If you'd be willing to buy a t-shirt, tell me your size and I will see what I can do.

Grace and peace,
John

Philippians 2:1-11

Prayer:

Almighty God,
Your only Son came to earth and took the posture of a servant

As He reigns in our hearts, may we rejoice in His peace,

“When we put on the mind of Christ and focus our thinking and behavior on the Kingdom of God, we can begin to evaluate our choices, our decisions, and our motivations with new clarity We move from a place of sleepwalking through our lives and being driven by earthbound instincts to a place of living in full consciousness of our position as heirs of the Most High.”

Hebrews 10:11-14 (15-18) 19-25;

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Rev. Ed Lantz Preaching
“Entrusted to Witness”
Acts 1:6-11
Prayer:
Almighty God,
you called your church to be One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.
By your grace you have given us new life in Jesus Christ, and by your Spirit you have called us to proclaim his name through out the nations: Awaken in us such a love for you and your world that in this Decade of Evangelism we may so boldy proclaim Jesus Christ by word and deed that all people may come to know him as Savior and follow him as Lord; to the glory of your Name.
Amen.
A prayer for evangelism- found on-line.

Food for thought:

Music Fridays- "Our Father"

I've posted music before from the Taize Community. Taize is a non-denominational monastic community founded by a Swiss Reformed pastor named Brother Roger during World War II. Since then, many young men from Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox backgrounds have taken vows of celibacy and poverty so they might devoted to Jesus Christ. Some young protestants, myself included, have been touched by how Taize manages to re-introduce Catholic and Eastern Orthodox music and spirituality to the protestant world. For others, music from Taize remains too Catholic for comfort.

In the hopes promoting the value of ancient liturgical practices, I submit this clip of a sung/chanted version of The Lord's Prayer. The video was taken during Brother Roger's funeral mass.

All Saint’s Day [White]
Rev. Ed Lantz Preaching
“Entrusted to Give”
2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Prayer/Food for Thought:
For All The Saints by William Walsham How, 1864
For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;
thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the apostles' glorious company,
who bearing forth the cross o'er land and sea,
shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee: Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the Evangelists, by whose blest word,
like fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord,
is fair and fruitful, be thy Name adored. Alleluia, Alleluia!

For Martyrs, who with rapture kindled eye,
saw the bright crown descending from the sky,
and seeing, grasped it, thee we glorify. Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
we feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;
soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;
sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
and singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, Alleluia!

Rev. Ed Lantz Preaching
“Entrusted to be Present”
Hebrews 10:25

Prayer:
Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Food for thought:

“Doing life together was God's plan from the beginning of time. From the relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the Trinity, to the twelve apostles, to the house churches, and even Jesus' final words in the Great Comission (Matthew 28:16-20)- all share the pattern of life together.”

UM news: Our Jurisdiction Is Re-aligning

Every four years, the leadership of the United Methodist Church gathers for what is know as General Conference. At that two week meeting, decisions are made about any number of issues from our stance on key theological, moral, and social concerns to "mechanical" matters of how we are organized as a denomination.

In keeping with the current economic state of the connection and in response to changes in membership patterns (i.e. our continued decline in the United States,) the decision was made for the South Central Jurisdiction (which runs from New Mexico over to Louisiana and up to Nebraska) to consolidate episcopal offices, thus reducing the number of Bishops in our conference from eleven to ten.

To make that happen, the College of Bishops voted to let the Nebraska Annual Conference share a Bishop with the Kansas East and Kansas West Annual Conferences.

While this decision will not have much if any impact on those of us at Tyler Street, it is good for us to stay informed about what is happening in the United Methodist Church at large.

And as a people of prayer, this presents us a fine opportunity to lift up our brothers and sisters in Nebraska and Kansas as they prepare for this transition. Let's pray that in the midst of this re-alignment, a renewed passion for the Gospel and a new desire to introduce people to Jesus Christ as savior and lord will invigorate United Methodist churches in those three annual conferences.

Most of the people groups for which these translations have been done are pre-literate oral societies. Hearing and seeing Scripture presentations is very effective for spreading the Good News. Nathan, their newly adopted son from the Philippines, will be with them. Scott, a member of Tyler Street, attended the church before he went overseas.

What is Urbana? Urbana is the missions conference for North American students hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Urbana 09 will be our 22nd conference. The first Urbana was held in 1946. From 1948 to 2003, the conferences were held at the University of Illinois at Urbana. Since 2006, Urbana has been held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. Generations of college students have come to Urbana to hear about cutting edge issues on missions and respond to the call to participate in God's global mission. During the five days of Urbana, participants will experience multi-cultural worship and drama, dynamic speakers, in-depth Bible study and prayer. Attendance is usually around 20,000. The Conference begins December 27-31. Urbana is for young adult men and women ages 18-30. Mark and Wendy Walker have agreed to lead a group to the Conference. Make plans now to attend!
