Music Fridays- Lenten Reflections

All through Lent, we have focused on our need of salvation. Let us broaden that thought beyond our personal need that we may consider social and environmental implications of salvation as well. For though each Christian experiences Jesus as personal savior, He is far, far more than that. He will not only reconcile the faithful unto God, He shall reconcile all things created unto God and restore the creation itself. Jesus is not just a sacrificial Lamb, He is Lord. All is His and He is All in All.

To that end, I have posted below Derek Webb's This Too Shall Be Made Right for your contemplation. Before you listen, I encourage you to read Romans 8. When you finish listening, I recommend that you read Revelation 21. May God open all of our eyes to a deeper understanding of our need for Christ.

Heavenly Father Full of Grace by Susan Remele

Heavenly Father Full of Grace,

Impart to me your Loving Embrace.

Fill me with your Holy Spirit,

every day and every minute.

Protect my thoughts and keep them clear,

from annoying worries, burdens, fears.

Cease the chatter in my head,

Deliver me from things unsaid.

Build my faith and make it true,

for I am nothing without you.

Prayer:

“O my all-merciful God and Lord,
Jesus Christ, full of pity:
Through Your great love You came down
and became incarnate in order to save everyone.
O Savior, I ask You to save me by Your grace!
If You save anyone because of their works,
that would not be grace but only reward of duty,
but You are compassionate and full of mercy!
You said, O my Christ,
"Whoever believes in Me shall live and never die."
If then, faith in You saves the lost, then save me,
O my God and Creator, for I believe.
Let faith and not my unworthy works be counted to me, O my God,
for You will find no works which could account me righteous.
O Lord, from now on let me love You as intensely as I have loved sin,
and work for You as hard as I once worked for the evil one.
I promise that I will work to do Your will,
my Lord and God, Jesus Christ, all the days of my life and forever more.”

Prayer of St. John Chrysostom

Gloria- Pat Whiteley

The following poem was contributed via e-mail by one of our members. Anyone wishing to submit material my use the e-mail link in the side-bar.

Gloria

He was before light dawned.
By his father took his place.

God whispered in his ear

What words did Jesus hear?

Let there be light!

So burst forth the glory

Of the never ending God

Jesus is the light of God.

Called out of God’s presence

The light of the world, his presence

Draw near to him rest in his presence.

For six days he toiled by speaking

Creating all the sky land and sea

On the sixth day his masterpiece man

Formed from the earth male and female, man

All was good, very good they rested

God, Jesus, and Spirit put work aside

He gave it to us as a day of rest and worship

Commanded us to spend the day in rest and worship

Sabbath is the day to worship God

His light filled the sky, the glory of God

Angels join us to worship the Lord our God.

Now the end is near the light seems dim

The light he who spoke forth life kneels

Cries out to his Father spare me

Not my will, just yours forgive me.

He calls on the glory

Of the Lord to come

Fill this place overcome the darkness

See my friends preserve them in darkness.

All glory to you my Father

Let everyone bring his praise to the Father

Together they abide with us Spirit, Son, and Father.

Jesus rescued me by dying on the cross

Pulled me from the pit of despair

He changed my life, my heart

Abiding forever in my heart

No longer need I live in fear

Yet every day I must overcome its pull

In my weakness does he empower

To live I need his power.

Let God come in regain his rightful claim

Restore your life in Jesus, forever the same

Give him your heart, live by his glorious name.

International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL)

Food for thought:

We are not building the kingdom by our own efforts, no. The Kingdom remains God's gift, new creation, sheer grace. But, as part of that grace already poured out in Jesus Christ and by the Spirit, we are building FOR the kingdom. I use the image of the eleventh-century stonemason, probably illiterate, working away on one or two blocks of stone according to the orders given to him. He isn't building the Cathedral; he is building FOR the Cathedral. When the master mason/architect gathers up all the small pieces of stone at which people have been working away, he will put them into the great edifice which he's had in mind all along and which he alone can build -- but FOR WHICH we can and must build in the present time.

Just A Reminder...

The other day, I was listening to Gamenight on ESPN 103.3 and heard a new word- "Itec" which is an acronym for "in these economic conditions" or "in this economic crisis." They use "Itec" to refer to any cost-cutting measure or any reason why a sports franchise (or a sports fan) might do things on the cheep. The coining of such a phrase is a sign of the times. Everyone is worried. Money is tight. Stree levels are very, very high.

Churches are not at all immune to economic stress. In the 1932, the people of Tyler Street actually worshiped at the Roswin Theater and at Sunset High School for nine months because the bank had pad-locked the building.

Fast-forward 70+ years, and Tyler Street is once again trying to stay in ministry during tough economic times. Last night's Charge Conference presented some tense moments as a weighty economic decision was being made. Yet in the end, all parties walked out the door unified in our commitment to make disciples for Jesus Christ no matter what the cost.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. When it comes to TSUMC's committment to ministry, that's a very good thing in deed.

So as we all consider how we might endure this economic storm, I will remind of all of you of the words Jesus spoke in Matthew 6:25-33 as found in the New English Translation:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?

Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are?

And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?

Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers of the field grow; they do not work or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, won’t he clothe you even more, you people of little faith?

So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the unconverted pursue these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

St. Ambrose of Milan (AD 339-397)

Food for thought:

TRUTH, not eloquence, is to be sought in reading the Holy Scriptures; and every part must be read in the spirit in which it was written. For in the Scriptures we ought to seek profit rather than polished diction.

Food for thought:

Jesus Christ must be loved alone with a special love for He alone, of all friends, is good and faithful. For Him and in Him you must love friends and foes alike, and pray to Him that all may know and love Him..
